Conhecer as principais espécies animais utilizadas como animais de estimação. Identificar as raças comuns de cães e gatos.
Conhecer anomalias e defeitos congénitos comuns a certas raças.
Conhecer os direitos dos animais de companhia e deveres dos detentores dos animais. Distinguir espécies animais exóticas em relação à taxonomia, alojamento e habitat natural.
Conhecer espécies animais usadas em investigação, bem como as recomendações e os regulamentos existentes para a sua utilização.

Identify common breeds of dogs and cats.
Recognize anomalies or birth defects related to certain breeds. Know pet rights and duties of animal keepers.
Distinguish exotic animal species in relation to taxonomy, housing and natural environment.

Raças caninas reconhecidas pela Federação Cinológica Internacional (FCI) e raças portuguesas: principais características.
Raças de gatos reconhecidas pela Federação Internacional de Felinicultura (FIFe).
Direitos dos animais de companhia e deveres dos detentores dos animais: legislação; estatuto jurídico dos animais. Cães perigosos e de raças consideradas potencialmente perigosas.
Identificação electrónica. Pré-requisitos para viajar.
Pequenos mamíferos; espécies comumente vistas na prática veterinária- leporídeos, porquinho-da-índia, ratos, hamster, cobaia, chinchila, esquilo, furão. Parâmetros biológicos, agrupamento social, alojamento e nutrição. Aves: psitacídeos e passeriformes; parâmetros biológicos, alojamento e nutrição.
Répteis: tartarugas, serpentes e lagartos; parâmetros biológicos, alojamento e nutrição.

Dog breeds recognized by the World Canine Organization (FCI) and Portuguese breeds: main characteristics. Cat breeds recognized by the Fédération Internationale Féline (FIFe).
Legal status of animals and other legislation related to animal rights and duties of animal keepers. Dangerous and breed dogs considered potentially dangerous.
Pet identification. Prerequisites for travel.
Small mammals; species usually seen in veterinary practice: rabbit, guinea pig, rats, hamster, guinea pig, chinchilla, squirrel, ferret; biological parameters, characteristics of social grouping, housing and nutrition of each mammalian group.
Birds: psittacines and passeiformes; biological parameters, housing and nutrition. Reptiles: turtles, snakes and lizards; biological parameters, housing and nutrition.

4.4.6. Demonstração da coerência dos conteúdos programáticos com os objetivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular: Os conteúdos programáticos estão alinhados com os objectivos de aprendizagem e demonstram-se pelas aquisição das seguintes competências:
Esta unidade curricular tem como principal objetivo familiarizar o estudante com os principais animais de companhia, exóticos e de laboratório. Pretende-se ainda alertar o estudante para os conceitos éticos e legislação envolvidos na detenção e maneio desses animais. Os conteúdos programáticos ao abordarem estas temáticas estão alinhados com os objectivos de aprendizagem, dotando o estudante de conhecimentos que lhe permitam identificar a espécie animal e raça mais indicadas a uma determinada função, a necessidade de criação de condições ideais para animais exóticos em cativeiro e responsabilizar as pessoas pela saúde e bem-estar dos animais ao seu cuidado.
4.4.6. Evidence of the syllabus coherence with the curricular unit’s intended learning outcomes:
This curricular unit aims to familiarize the student with the most common pets, exotic and laboratory animals. It intends to alert the student to the ethical concepts and regulations involved in the detention and handling of those animals. The syllabus, by addressing these subjects are aligned with the learning outcomes, providing the student with knowledge about the most appropriate animal species or breed to a particular function, the need to create ideal
conditions for exotic animals in captivity and making people responsible for the health and welfare of animals. 4.4.7. Metodologias de ensino (avaliação incluída):
A fim de poder conferir as competências propostas, o processo de ensino/aprendizagem baseia-se em: Aulas de exposição teórica dos conteúdos e visualização de vídeos.
Aulas práticas: (i) estudos de casos práticos, (ii) na análise e discussão de normas que regulam a manipulação de animais (iii) Realização de trabalhos de pesquisa bibliográfica orientada sobre alguns temas de interesse com apresentação oral.

A avaliação teórica escrita (50%) e avaliação contínua nas aulas práticas, interpretação e resolução de estudos-de- caso e elaboração e apresentação de um trabalho, após pesquisa bibliográfica orientada sobre um tema de interesse (50%).
4.4.7. Teaching methodologies (including students' assessment):
In order to achieve the proposed competences, the teaching / learning process is based on: Lectures of theoretical exposition and video viewing.
Practical classes: (i) case studies, (ii) analysis and discussion of rules related to animal handling (iii) Bibliographic research oriented on some topics of interest with oral presentation.
Approval in the curricular unit requires the student to have a minimum grade greater than or equal to 9.5, obtained by weighting the following assessment instruments:
Written theoretical assessment (50%) and continuous assessment in practical classes, interpretation and resolution of case studies and preparation and presentation of a work, after bibliographic research on a topic of interest (50%). 4.4.8. Demonstração da coerência das metodologias de ensino com os objetivos de aprendizagem da unidade curricular:
A aplicação imediata dos conceitos teóricos em situações de prática, feita em aulas teóricas e práticas facilita a sua consolidação, permitindo ao estudante conhecer a espécie animal mais indicada a uma determinada função e
interiorizar os conceitos éticos envolvidos na detenção e maneio dos animais de companhia, exóticos e de laboratório. Por outro lado, a avaliação contínua estimula no estudante um estudo contínuo dos conteúdos apresentados, o que facilita a aquisição de competências ao longo do semestre. A execução de procedimentos em contexto de aulas práticas, permite ainda o desenvolvimento da capacidade de reagir e tomar decisões na atividade profissional. 4.4.8. The direct application of theoretical concepts in practical situations, done in theoretical and practical classes
facilitates their consolidation, allowing the student to know the animal species best suited to a particular function and implement the ethical concepts involved in the keeping and handling of pet, exotic and laboratory animals. On the other hand, continuous assessment encourages students to continuously study the contents presented, which facilitates the acquisition of skills throughout the semester. The execution of procedures in the context of practical classes, also allows the development of the ability to react and make decisions in the professional activity.
